Gravity Water Filters Guide

Categories: Blog

Gravity water filters are a popular choice for many thanks to their relatively easy use and sustainable design.

Often a go-to water filtration for campers and travel, these filter systems make a great option for those looking for a simpler clean water solution.

But how can you properly maintain your filtration system so it lasts its full lifespan?

Explore the following guide for details on how effective these filters are and how to keep yours functioning in top shape.

Common uses of gravity filtration

Gravity filters are used for a wide range of purposes. The most common uses are for treating drinking water while living off the grid, camping, and even for home use. These filters have even been used in commercial capacities, like treating wastewater and purifying water for laboratory use.

Some other uses include:

  • Separating solids from water

  • Emergency preparation for obtaining safe water

  • Filtering fat, broth, or used oil for culinary use

How effective are gravity filters?

These filters are an accurate and reliable water filtering source, especially on the go. Their efficiency allows them to last for quite some time and filter up to 2,500 litres per cartridge, a feature common for many reliable brands, such as Newton.

To understand how long gravity water filters last, it’s important to account for each component of the filter system.

Most gravity filter systems consist of three components to filter water. For ceramic cartridges that filter larger particles and substances, as well as heavy metals and limescale, they usually last between 6 months and a year, depending on the amount of water used.

Their efficiency is thanks to the combination of ceramic housing and granular carbon particles, to easily pull ultra-heavy metals from all sorts of sources of water.

Fluoride filters need to be replaced more often, lasting about 4- 6 months on average.

Keep in mind that the water you are filtering may require your filters to be changed more often to accommodate higher levels of fluoride and chemical contaminants.

Proper gravity filter maintenance

It’s important when you’re using your filtration system to maintain it properly in order to ensure its longevity, especially if you’re off the grid and have limited resources for clean water without it.

A general rule is to clean your gravity filter system regularly, when filtering water from natural sources, at least once a month and tap water every 6 to 8 weeks.

Because natural sources of water often have sediments that can collect in the chamber, the best way to clean your filter is to first inspect where buildup has occurred, take it apart carefully, and using a brush and cool water, remove buildup in its compartments.

Always use just clean water and a brush, as any chemicals, vinegar, and even soaps can damage the cartridges or the components of a gravity water filter. Be sure to wipe down the outer housing of the system and carefully replace each component after a thorough rinse.

This will keep your system in top shape between cartridge changes and ensure you’re enjoying the cleanest water you can.

Tips for gravity filter success

To make the most of your gravity water filter system, it’s a good idea to start including these practices and tips. Below are other recommendations that will make both tracking and caring for your filter system a lot easier:

  • Get help with installation - If you’re new to using gravity water filters, always seek guidance on how to properly install and care for your system. At Finerfilters,  we provide videos and instructions on our blog for all the filters we offer.

  • Keep track of your water quality - This can be as simple as checking for anomalies in taste, smell, and colour of your water. It can also include using special testing tools like TDS meters to determine if it’s time to change your cartridge sooner rather than later.

  • Maintain a schedule for all cartridges - Because there are many components to a gravity water filter system, and cartridges last only as long as the amount and quality of water flowing through them, maintaining a schedule that tracks both when a filter is changed and the type of water used is ideal.
