How To Install Reverse Osmosis Systems
In this guide, we will walk you through the process of setting up a Reverse Osmosis (RO) system.
We will cover every step of the process to ensure a straightforward process that can be completed in just a few hours.
So, let's get started and learn how to bring clean, purified drinking water into your home.
Before you Install Your Reverse osmosis System
Installing a reverse osmosis system is a straightforward process that can be completed with basic tools and by following straightforward instructions.
What You Need
When installing an RO system you will need the correct equipment. While some products provide a toolless setup, it’s always good to have tools on hand.
Here is what you need:
- The RO system itself.
- A Phillips head screwdriver.
- A pipe cutter (if you need to cut into your copper pipe). If you are connecting the water from a washing machine valve or pre-existing outlet, then this is not needed.
- An adjustable wrench or socket tool.
- A drill and drill bits for the drain saddle valve and the RO faucet.
Step-by-Step Reverse Osmosis Installation Guide
Here are some installation tips to help you set up your system efficiently:
- Preparation:
- Gather all necessary tools and materials, including the RO system kit, a drill, tubing cutter, wrenches, and Teflon tape.
- Choose a suitable location for your RO system near a cold water line and drainage point.
- Shut Off Water Supply:
- Turn off the main water supply to your home before beginning the installation process.
- Install Faucet:
- Drill a hole in the sink or countertop for the RO faucet.
- Mount the faucet securely and connect it to the RO system.
- Connect Water Supply:
- Connect the cold water supply line to the RO system's inlet valve.
- When you insert the tubing into the inlet of the unit, be sure to secure the tubing in place with the provided collet clip(s) to get a secure connection and prevent leaks.
- Install Drain Line:
- Connect the drain line from the RO system to the sink drain or another suitable drainage point.
- Ensure that the drain line is properly secured and has no kinks or obstructions.
- Install Filter Cartridges:
- Remove the protective wrapping and insert the pre-filter cartridges into their respective housings.
- DO NOT install the membrane element until you have completed the first system flush. This is to ensure no loose carbon fines travel into the membrane element which can prematurely clog the membrane. The membrane should only be installed after a number of litres have passed through the system and saturated the pre and post-filters.
- Follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper installation and alignment.
- Pressurise System:
- Turn on the main water supply and allow the RO system to pressurise.
- Check for any leaks or issues with the connections.
- Flush System:
- Flush the RO system by running water through it for several minutes. Be sure to open the L1 valve, close the tank valve and open the faucet to allow water to quickly pass through the system.
- This helps to remove any air bubbles and flush out any debris from the system.
- Turn off water supply.
- Install the membrane element, then turn the water supply back on to saturate the membrane.
- After flushing around 6 litres through the unit, close the L1 valve, open the tank valve and close the faucet. The system will slowly start to fill up the storage tank with RO water.
- Empty the first lot of RO water from the tank and allow it to fill again. Once the tank is full, the water will be safe to drink and you can enjoy your filtered water.
- Note: water production speed will increase over time. However, you should still expect around 130ml per minute of pure RO water production per minute for a traditional Domestic Reverse Osmosis (50GPD) system (under optimal conditions).
- Test Water Quality:
- Test the water quality from the RO faucet to ensure that the system is functioning properly.
- Monitor the system regularly and replace filters as needed to maintain water quality.
Some common mistakes to avoid during installation include improper tubing connections and failing to flush the system before use.
If you encounter any problems, check for leaks, confirm proper pressure, and verify the membrane is correctly installed.
