FAQs

What does the 4th stage do?

The 4th stage on an aquarium Reverse Osmosis System usually contains a mixed bed DI Resin Media Filter. This filter has de-ionised media inside which uses positive and negatively charged ions to attract left over contaminants that may have slipped through the reverse osmosis membrane. The DI filter is also known as a “polishing” filter, as it brings water down to 0TDS after the 92-98% reduction you can expect from the membrane alone under optimal conditions.

How often should I replace the filters in an Aquarium RO system?

Regular pre-filter replacement is typically recommended every 6 months. The membrane element can be replaced every 18-24 months, but the actual frequency may vary based on water quality and usage. DI resin can be expected to be replaced on a more frequent basis, depending on how hard it has to work. For example, if you have 20ppm left after your membrane, then the DI resin will remove those 20ppm to bring the water down to 0TDS. If it has 40ppm after the membrane, it will have to work twice as hard to remove those contaminants and this will require the media to be replaced more frequently. To gain a precise idea, you can use a TDS meter to monitor your water quality.

How can I prolong the lifespan of my filters?

Having optimal water pressure (80-100PSI) and optimal water temperature (25°C) will prolong the lifespan of your filters, increase efficiency (resulting in lower TDS from the membrane) and increase water flow.

Can a 4-stage RO filter be used for freshwater and saltwater aquariums?

Yes, these systems are suitable for both freshwater and saltwater applications making them a fantastic addition to your RO system.
