Sediment in your water supply is a more common problem than you might expect. Sand, silt, rust flakes, and fine grit can all find their way into your water through old pipework, nearby groundworks, or if you're on a private well or borehole. Even mains supplies can carry sediment, especially after pressure fluctuations or work on local pipework.
Over time, it causes discolouration, blocks appliances, and generally makes water unpleasant to use. It can also shorten the lifespan of washing machines, dishwashers, and boilers, as particles gradually build up inside valves and heating elements.

Filters to Remove Sediment from Water
Sediment filters physically trap particles before they reach your tap, appliance, or fish tank. The micron rating tells you the size of the particle it catches. For visible grit or sand, something in the 20 to 50 micron range will handle it. For finer silt or rust, you'll want 1 to 5 micron. If you're unsure, it's usually better to go finer, as a lower-micron filter filters what a higher-micron one would, and more besides.
We stock spun polypropylene cartridges, which are the most popular choice for everyday sediment removal. Pleated sediment filters offer a larger surface area, so they tend to last longer and cope better at higher flow rates. String wound filters work well where water carries a mix of different particle sizes.
Cartridges are available in standard 10 inch and 20 inch sizes, as well as jumbo BB formats for whole house housings. If you keep fish or have a garden pond, a sediment pre-filter is an important first stage before water reaches any further treatment.
